The beginning of the trial

The trial against Filippo Turetta, who confessed to the murder of Giulia Cecchettin, has started in Venice. The ex-boyfriend of the victim is accused of aggravated murder but did not appear in court, as anticipated by his defense. His family was also absent. In contrast, Giulia’s father, Gino Cecchettin, entered the courtroom but declined to speak to journalists, stating: “It’s too early.”

Charges and witnesses

Turetta faces serious charges, including voluntary homicide, premeditation, cruelty, and stalking. The defense has brought forward only one witness, Monica Cucci, the pathologist who participated in the victim’s autopsy. On the other hand, the prosecution, led by Pm Andrea Petroni, has called on around thirty witnesses, including family, friends, and investigators.

Associations and municipalities join as civil parties

Several civil parties have joined the trial, including Giulia’s family members and various associations such as Penelope and Differenza Donna. The municipalities of Vigonovo and Fossò, emotionally involved due to their proximity to the victim, have also requested to participate. However, Turetta’s lawyer, Giovanni Caruso, requested that these associations be excluded, stating that the trial should not become “a banner for these groups.”

The court’s approach

The president of the Court of Assizes, Stefano Manduzio, clarified that the trial will focus on Filippo Turetta’s personal responsibility, and it will not be a broader investigation into femicide. Prosecutor Bruno Cherchi emphasized the importance of focusing on the facts: “This is not a sociological study, but a determination of personal responsibility.”
