Today’s global IT outage, affecting CrowdStrike and Microsoft Azure services, had a limited impact on Italian micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs). According to Unimpresa, 95% of its member companies were unaffected, continuing their activities smoothly. This resilience is attributed to the predominant use of traditional methods in their commercial operations.

Response of Italian SMEs

A survey conducted by Unimpresa’s research center revealed that Italian SMEs, operating mainly offline, were less vulnerable to the outage. Managing supplier relationships, payments, invoicing, and banking often rely on physical methods, minimizing the impact of technological events.

Comparison with Large Enterprises

While large enterprises and multinationals suffered more from the outage, Italian SMEs relied on established procedures not solely dependent on digital technologies. This traditional approach allowed them to maintain operational continuity and service stability, mitigating the disruptions caused by the global interruption.

The Importance of Balancing Innovation and Tradition

Despite their traditional approach, Unimpresa acknowledges the importance of digital technologies in business development and competitiveness. Promoting digital solutions that enhance daily operations without compromising resilience is crucial. The balance between technological innovation and traditional methods has proven essential for many Italian SMEs.

Reflections and Future Prospects

Today’s incident highlights the need for a balanced use of technologies, avoiding an exclusive dependency that could jeopardize operational capabilities. Developing strategies that integrate the best of digital with traditional expertise, investing in training and resilient infrastructures, is essential. Only then can we ensure a future where technologies serve humanity, not the other way around.

Unimpresa President Giovanna Ferrara commented, “We must invest in solutions that integrate the best of digital with traditional knowledge. Innovation must go hand in hand with preserving our skills and operational autonomy.”
