Clear strategy needed in Italian automotive

During today’s meeting at the Ministry of Made in Italy, a clear divergence emerged between the strategies of automotive manufacturers and the ministry. Giuseppe Spadafora, vice president of Unimpresa, highlighted how Minister Urso is showing the ability to understand territorial and business needs, but reiterated the need for binding agreements with European manufacturers. Without penalties for the latter, according to Spadafora, it would be better to open the market to Chinese competition.

Industry priorities and lack of national vision

Spadafora criticized large industries, particularly Stellantis, for their desire to maintain profits without considering territorial development. The only clear voices are those of the regions and employer associations such as Unimpresa. He pointed out the lack of a national strategy and long-term vision in the Italian automotive sector, lamenting that major manufacturers only seek to minimize labor and energy costs while requesting state incentives.

Solutions proposed by Unimpresa

The vice president of Unimpresa proposes incentives for research and development in small companies in the sector, a remodulation of tax credits, and a national strategy that goes beyond simple electrification. Spadafora also called for the ministry to oblige manufacturers to sign contracts with suppliers, overcoming the practice of open orders, which are difficult to finance through banks.
