Milan, July 17, 2024 – On July 16 and 17, the X Value Lab of Medtronic hosted ‘AI NOW ITALY – Embracing the Future Right Here, Right Now,’ an event focused on the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in endoscopy, featuring the GI Genius™ device. This cutting-edge technology is designed to detect colorectal polyps, improving the diagnosis of colorectal lesions. Clinicians from all over Italy shared their experiences, highlighting the positive impact of GI Genius™ in medical practice.

The revolution of AI in medicine

In healthcare, artificial intelligence is transforming medical diagnoses. Thanks to sophisticated machine learning algorithms, AI can analyze vast amounts of medical data with precision, supporting doctors in clinical decisions and improving patient health outcomes.

GI Genius™: the first CADe system available on the market

GI Genius™ is the first computer-aided detection (CADe) system using AI to identify colorectal polyps. Its effectiveness has been confirmed by over 30 international scientific studies, involving more than 23,000 patients. With a potential impact on 2.7 million patients annually, GI Genius™ represents a significant innovation in colonoscopy.

Strategic collaboration for innovation

“The recent agreement between Medtronic, Cosmo, and Nvidia allows us to accelerate the development of new artificial intelligence algorithms,” says David Serafini, Business Manager Endoscopy for Italy, Greece, and Israel. “Medtronic is committed to improving health and extending life, and GI Genius™ enhances the quality of colonoscopy, positively impacting many lives.”

Advanced device functionalities

In addition to detecting polyps of various shapes and sizes, GI Genius™ is now equipped with a characterization function (CADx) that predicts the histological nature of the polyp: “no adenoma” or “adenoma.” This function activates automatically and provides a response within seconds.

Promising clinical results

Studies such as “Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Miss Rate of Colorectal Neoplasia” (Wallace et al., 2022) and “Efficacy of Real-Time Computer-Aided Detection of Colorectal Neoplasia in a Randomized Trial” (Repici et al., 2020) have shown that GI Genius™ can significantly reduce the Adenoma Miss Rate (AMR) and improve the Adenoma Detection Rate (ADR) without prolonging procedure time.

Artificial intelligence as essential support

“The colon’s structure makes it difficult to fully explore the mucosa, but AI has proven to be a crucial aid in the search for precursor polyps of colon cancer,” explains Dr. Massimo Cianci. “AI is the endoscopist’s third eye, helping to focus on areas of the mucosa often difficult to detect.”
