Excommunication of Archbishop Viganò
The Vatican has officially excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò following an extrajudicial penal process conducted by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The excommunication, known as “latae sententiae,” was imposed on Viganò for the crime of schism.
Reasons for the Excommunication
The Dicastery justified the excommunication by citing Viganò’s public statements. “His public affirmations are well known, from which it results the refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, the communion with the members of the Church subject to him, and the legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council,” emphasized the former Holy Office.
